The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.
"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors involved, aside from his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.
"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."
Previous Setbacks
Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.
The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.
He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.
Alternative Arrangements
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.
All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.
The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.
"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
