The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in September and given more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.
High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.
This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the protest called by his son.
His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a assembly of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
The senator wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the chance of his transfer to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a record of planning to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.
The legal document underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist American leader President Trump, leading him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being held in a Federal Police station in the capital and will have a detention review on Sunday.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also requested that the former president be permitted to leave his home for healthcare, saying he needed ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.
Context of Sentencing
He was convicted of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of his backers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.
The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been provoked by him whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, restore order and reinstate his authority.
At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also banned from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.
The one-time head of state called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 presidential election.
