The speculation around the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer packed with striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team could be designing a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it sparked the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths only possible by choosing a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for a new entry in this legendary franchise.
